About Us
Your Hosts: Carol Redmond and Rick Placke
Carol Redmond
Carol Redmond traveled the world as a delegate for the sport of synchronized swimming after being honored as a member of the Helms Swimming Hall of Fame.
Previously from the west coast, she found Black Mountain to be a perfect place for rest and relaxation amidst nature's wonderland.
International guests find a warm welcome from Carol as well as a helpful resource for local travel. Carol is also an avid hiker and can point you to trails that fit your style whether it be an easy stroll around Lake Tomahawk or a steep trek up Lookout Mountain.
Rick Placke
Rick joined our staff as night manager and general helpful handyman. He has brought new inspiration to the grounds evidenced by his creative landscaping and rustic touches in the arbors and outdoor benches and tables that he builds in the shop near the picnic area. You can often watch him creating an original work in progress, and find you just have to take it home with you!
The Property
Flowing gently on the south side of the property is Flat Creek which provides many hours of entertainment and relaxation along the banks for kids of all ages.
Within the cluster of cabins is a playground and covered picnic area for family or group gatherings. Often it seems that many of our guests are inspired by the beauty of nature in our mountains. Our picnic area was enhanced by friend, JOANIE WOODS, with help from Pame who recreated the watercolor scene of the Blue Ridge Mountains painted on the murals. Many of our returning guests have been coming annually since the 1950's including some of the other children of former owners of the property.
A small meditation chapel was created from the original hand-built spring house on the property. Intimate weddings have been held here as well as renewal of vows ceremonies.
The Wishing Well, built in the 1920's as the original water pump, is still providing water for the gardens scattered around the property.
